After only a week of staying at home with my mom and step-dad, I was getting cabin fever and itching to get back to Indianapolis. I LOVE my parent’s house and I adore being home (constant hot coffee, yummy food, clean house, and my mom is always around to entertain me) oh… and Kyle is there. But nevertheless, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the things I wanted to do once I was back in Indianapolis. I just wanted a few days to get my stuff together, put away my Christmas presents, clean the house, and get ready for my next rotation to being. So yesterday, I packed up my car and headed back to Indy.
Breakfast
I rarely buy cereal myself because I will eat the entire box in 1 hour. But my mom makes the absolute best cereal mix (a few different types of cereal and some granola mixed in) so whenever I’m home, I get cereal for breakfast!!
This time I topped it with blueberries!
Workout
I guess I’m combining 2 days worth of workouts. Yesterday I was back in Indianapolis and able to go to my normal gym! I did a 20 minute arm workout with weights and finished with 25 minutes on the elliptical. (with a trashy magazine obviously).
I was snowed in 2 days ago at my parents and had to resort to another at-home workout. I did this one:
Lunch
I was just a little bit hungry so I had a small plate of leftover Christmas turkey, sweet potatoes, and cranberries.
Later on, I was hungry again so I made a bowl of turkey chili with a sprinkle of cheese on top.
Dinner
Now we get to the title of this post: I really hate going out to eat. I know this sounds crazy since most people love going to restaurants, but here is how I feel about it: Whenever I go out to eat I am **almost** always disappointed. I will say there are some times when we go to an excellent restaurant with creative meals made with great ingredients, but that is not the usual case. Usually this is what happens:
Kyle: Let’s go out to eat!
Me: Ok!! I have tons of great food in the fridge, but that’s okay, we can still go out to eat it will be great!
Kyle: (at the restaurant) Yum yum I think I’m going to order this big juicy burger, or pizza, or pasta, or something else delicious and filled with thousands of calories.
Me: (looking over the menu) Man, all these unhealthy options sound so yummy but I know I will have a huge stomach ache if I get something so rich and I don’t want to eat 1 million calories tonight so I guess I will just order a salad.
Kyle: (eats his garlic bread, cheesy, gooey, saucy, whatever he ordered) how is your salad?
Me: It sucks. I could have made a 100 times better salad at home for half the price and half the calories. Plus, if I ate at home I wouldn’t have to stare at your cheesy, gooey, artery clogging meal. AND, I would still have enough calories left over to have dessert!
This is pretty much how it goes every time we go out to eat. I know I am such a debbie downer and I should love going out to eat but seriously it’s just frustrating when I know whatever I made at home would be WAY healthier (even if I order something “healthy” on the menu) and it would be cheaper and probably tastier.
2 nights ago, Kyle and I went to dinner with his family at a restaurant that had very few healthy options. None of the salads on the menu sounded good and every entree was fried, creamy, saucy, cheesy, you get it. Don’t get me wrong- I think all these unhealthy things are DELICIOUS. I had just already devoured 8 chocolate chip cookies that day and didn’t want a heavy dinner.
So I ordered a side salad and a baked sweet potato. Such a simple order and I kid you not- it was delicious!!!
It was super low calorie (I only had half of one of those dressing containers) and super inexpensive! SCORE!!
I didn’t even feel jealous of all the other people who ordered regular things off the menu. I couldn’t believe it!!
Questions:
Do you have trouble at restaurants like I do? Or do you think I’m crazy?
What do you order when you go out to eat?

I know exactly how you feel. I hate ordering salads out because I can make much better ones at home that are healthier and way cheaper. A lot of the time I’ll find something else to order instead of a salad, but usually I’d rather have found something at home that I can control how healthy/unhealthy it is.
Right????? I’m so glad you feel the same as I do!
I just found your blog through FitFluential. I live in the Indy area too! I like going out to eat, but I still try to make healthy choices. I’m picky about the restaurants I choose. I love going out for sushi, because I get vegetarian rolls and know exactly what is inside of them!
OMG Emily!!! I’ve been DYING to find other bloggers in the Indy area!!! Meet up asap please!?!?! How could I forget about sushi? I will never complain about going out to eat if it’s for sushi
I usually plan any meal out to be indulgent unless it’s a place I am familiar with. For dinner I look for grilled fish or chicken and un-sauced vegetables! Or, I order something “normal” and only eat 1/2 (like a burger). That’s a great circuit — what are truck jumps and suitcases?
That’s a good way to do it- ordering grilled fish/chicken and veggies. But I still feel like it would be better if I made it! haha!! Suitcases are an ab exercise- Here is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaOm45oW9y8. Tuck jumps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlI_oY2Qmro
Ahh I was just having this discussion with my mom today! I’m home from college and, with a bunch of relatives in town, we’ve been going out to eat dinner for the past few nights since it’s easier and no one wants to cook after a big Christmas dinner. BUT…I HATE IT! Not only have I been trying to “recover” from an epic tour-de-eating on Christmas day, but I’ve been surrounded by leftover chocolate bark, coffee cake, cheese and crackers, etc. So…all I want to eat is healthy food and it’s basically impossible when I have a fridge full of brie and homemade chocolates and when we go out to dinner. Gah…give me a salad and a sweet potato. PLEASE!
I am dying laughing! And I relate 100%!!!
Love your workout! Looks like a great way to get an awesome sweat!!
Thanks!!
I often feel the same way when I go out to eat. I hate wasting money or calories on something but when I “have to” eat out, I try to explore soups and appetizers
Btw I love your necklace!
Thanks!! I get soups a lot too! At the restaurant the other day they only had chili… bummer.
I feel the exact same way! Except knowing I can make a better salad at home I get something laden with calories and fats and then feel super guilty afterwards because it doesn’t even taste that good. Story of my life.
hmmm what about options like grilled seafood or something? from my experience, i feel like most places have some kind of grilled healthy option…
or what about ordering something that sounds good BUT just eating until you’re full? when i go out to eat, i always like to order a side salad and eat it first, THEN eat the entree- but part of my stomach is already stuffed with veg so i don’t gorge myself on overly rich food…plus, if you only have rich food every once in awhile, it’s not so bad right?! that’s what i tell myself anyways…
Yea you’re right- I just never want the healthier options! LOL! Eating a salad first is such a good tip- it really does fill you up!
