WIAW: Attack of the Gummy Bears!

Hey all!  It’s Wednesday and I officially remembered to photograph everything I ate yesterday in preparation for What I Ate Wednesday.  It’s more like ‘What I Ate Tuesday’.  I confessed that I had this aspect of WIAW pretty mixed up for a while the last time I posted about WIAW.

Thanks to Jen from Peas and Crayons for hosting WIAW!!!

Breakfast

Yesterday started out pretty uneventfully.  I had to be in clinic by 8am and so I left the house a little after 7 am to give myself plenty of time to drive, park, walk through the ice and only fall over 3 times  try not to slip and fall. Before I left for the clinic, I made a huge mug full of plain Greek yogurt, blueberries, and PB2.  One of the comments yesterday was about mixing in PB2.  I just mix it right in dry.  Do you mix it with water or milk first and then add it to things?  I just dump it right in ;-)

Morning at the Clinic

I am now on my outpatient pediatrics rotation which I think will be very similar to my outpatient medicine rotation.  I switch clinics every half day; in the morning I’m at one place, and I go somewhere else for the afternoon.  I have NINE days in which I only work half of the day… the other time is for ‘study’ aka gym/laundry/facebook/house-cleaning/news-reading at Starbucks.

Just kidding… I really do need to study ;-)

After morning clinic yesterday, I was finished for the day so I headed home to make lunch.

Lunch

I was pretty hungry and so a gigantic bowl of veggies and egg whites was in order.  I microwaved some broccoli before adding it to a sauté pan with spinach, seitan, green onions, and 3 egg whites.

I topped the mixture with avocado, sprouts, and sriracha.  2 clementines on the side= perfect lunch.

(I shared the first picture on instagram yesterday.)  If we’re not friends on IG we should be!  Follow me at adoctorinthehouse and I will follow you back I promise! :-)

The remainder of the afternoon was spent in the car dealership while my oil was changed.  They even washed my car and vacuumed it out which made the 2 hour wait TOTALLY worth it!  One of my professors from studying abroad (whom I have become really close with) was in town and so he came and waited at the dealership with me.  He’s a miraculous person and very spiritual.  We talked about mindfulness, living in spirit, prayer, listening to God, all the good stuff.  I love it when I get to see him!

Dinner

By 3:30 my tummy was growling again so I came home and made a smoothie with tofu, banana, spinach, and protein powder.  I topped it with some cocoa roasted almonds.

Workout

I had every intention of going to spinning class at 6:45 last night.  I got to the gym at 6pm and planned on lifting weights until spin class.  But after a few sets of bicep curls, walking push-ups, and overhead presses, I wasn’t feeling the weight room and so I decided to take my ipad and study on the elliptical for 30 minutes before spinning.

1:9:7

I went back downstairs to the spin area 10 minutes before class started and wouldn’t you know it… CLASS WAS FULL!!!  I was SO annoyed because this is the same class I went to last week that was EMPTY.. but alas, all the bikes were taken and I was the left out in the cold.

So I dragged my booty back to the elliptical and did 25 more minutes for a total of 50 minutes swinging back and forth while reading about respiratory illness in kids.  (P.S.  I know I’m on the same page in this second picture but I swear I did 2 separate sessions of elliptical- both 25 minutes).

I finished my workout with this:

Abs and Arms OUCH

  • 10 push-ups
  • 1 minute plank
  • 10 plank walk-ups each side
  • repeat x 3

It wasn’t the best workout in the whole world, but at least I got to sweat, move, study, and lift a few weights :-/

Snacks

When I came home I had a glass of green juice, showered, and went to bed pretty quickly.

1:9:10

I don’t love eating right after working out.  I also don’t love going to bed feeling super full (unless I’m full of ice-cream).  So unless I’ve lifted really heavy weights and feel like I need to replenish my muscles with some food, I will generally only eat a little snack or just drink some water or tea and then go to bed.  ****This is only if my workout comes close to 8pm.  If I’m done working out by 5 or 6, then trust me I eat a ton!

OK, now I have to admit something…. I also ate a ton of gummy bears yesterday.  1434gummi-bears

I have gummies in the house from Christmas and yesterday I was a gummy snacking machine.  Kyle LOVES gummies and so I bought him a Costco sized bag of them (6 lbs!) for Christmas and they were gone in a week!  Since then, we’ve bought other bags to snack on and I keep thinking it’s okay to have these little sugary bears in my life.  Last weekend we ate 2 bags while watching a movie!

As I was stuffing these green, red, and white (my favorite flavors) treats into my mouth, it suddenly hit me.  I thought, “WHAT AM I DOING?!?!”

“These are CRAP, not food, full of sugar, nothing-good-can-come-of-these bears!”

I had become so accustomed to having candy around, it didn’t even strike me as unhealthy.  During the holidays, I think you should eat whatever you like (in moderation) and have some candy!  It’s a special time and if you love gummies, go for it!  But every regular Tuesday is not the right occasion for sugar-laden snacks.

I heard a voice in my head say “this is garbage food- get rid of it!”   So I threw them away.  Phew!  Glad we made it through that one alive.

Questions

Do you find yourself keeping unhealthy habits without realizing it?

Do you love gummy bears and worms as much as I do?

What did you eat yesterday??  Or today?  Anything good on the menu?

    • Sounds like me!! Coming home with the Costco bag… thinking it’s totally normal.. It was okay in high school but my body doesn’t like it now!

    • Don’t you hate it when you realize that something is starting to become a not so good idea? Like the sweedish fish? It’s such a bummer- I always think I can handle having ice-cream in the house or something, and then after a week or 2 I think, “nope- this was a bad idea” lol!

    • I used to buy it on iherb.com (I have a discount code if you want it). I know a ton of people who get it on amazon.com because you can buy it in bulk. I should probably start doing that!

    • Same here. I feel like I’ve definitely gained a few pounds since the holidays. But it all goes back to normal after a week or two of clean eating :-)

  1. My husband and I love gummy worms (especially the sour ones), bears, and a few years ago we found gummy octopus! Those things must be coated with crack or something because if I have them in the house I just have to eat the bag!
On the menu today are organic chicken, garlic, and mozzarella sausages. I’m going to grill them and serve with marinara and asparagus. Yum!

    • OMG gummy octopus- I should stay away from those forever because they sound awesome! haha!! Ummm I’m coming over for dinner because that meal sounds delicious!!

  2. I love all things sweet! My favorite are the gummy worms covered in sugar-the worst kind. :) My biggest issue is snacking when I’m at work, stuck behind a computer for 10 hours. It gets tough! But I started the Insanity diet two days ago and I’ve been making all of my meals the night before! Have you ever tried Insanity before? Also, I started my blog finally! It’s VERY rough but it’s there! :)

  3. Your meals look yummy! I’ve found myself keeping up with some unhealthy habit (ahem cookies) from the holidays. Mostly without realizing it but since I indulged a bit over Christmas, my body feels like it “wants” sugar. I’m trying to dial it back but it’s hard! I had to throw out the rest along with chocolate and other things so I wouldn’t be tempted.

    • I feel the same! I’m in the habit of eating processed sugary stuff and so I keep craving it! Way to go with throwing it out! That’s what I always have to do! (and then avoid the grocery so I don’t buy more ;-) )

  4. Sour gummy worms are pretty tasty, I’ll give ya that. ;) I don’t think I’ll ever be able to participate in WIAW because I ALWAYSALWAYSALWAYS forget to take pictures of what I eat. Always. Oh well, what can you do!

And I hate when classes fill up! It’s a bummer, but I’m glad you still finished out some time on the elliptical. Get it done!

    • I have days where I forget to photograph everything. Once you get used to whipping your camera out every 2 seconds, it becomes more of a habit lol. Thanks for the encouragement Amanda!!

  5. What a fantastic lunch idea!! sounds like something delicious I’d get at a restaurant :)

But how do you stay full with just a salad and smoothie!? I know id def be hunnnnnggrrryyy And that’s not working out and sitting in my butt all day!

My problem with healthy food is it never keeps me full for long even if I add protein and or complex fibers :-/

    • I think I was so full all day from the massive amounts of gummy worms I had consumed!! I was seriously grabbing handfuls all day :-/ I’ve found tht there are some foods that can really keep me full and others.. not so much- I think you just need to know what works for you! Smoothies don’t keep me full in the morning- I need grains of some sort like oatmeal or toast. For lunch I also HAVE to have carbs. If I just do veggies and protein, I will be starving later on. For dinner I’m usually not as hungry and I like going to bed not feeling so full, so I can do a smoothie or veggies without carbs and feel okay. But I still cave and eat sweets and carbs at night even though I don’t need to lol!
