Lasers In The Eye and Loving It!

Food

Man oh man have I been eating well lately.  I mentioned I was feeling sluggish and gross because of some more sugar and processed food in my diet than I should have…well I am back to feeling great!  Since Friday I have been fueling with super healthy meals and I’ve avoided sugar like the plague.  I’m still eating fruit, but I’m really trying to stop adding so many sweeteners to things like my oatmeal and yogurt.

Has anyone seen this e-book?  I Quit Sugar.  I kind of want to do it!

Along with my Roasted Vegetable Soup, I made some salmon and chicken to eat this week.  For the chicken, I simply squeezed half of a big, juicy lemon into a bowl and added 2 cloves chopped garlic, a handful of chopped parsley, a huge tbs dijon mustard, and a little olive oil.  I mixed it with a whisk until all the ingredients were incorporated and then poured it over my chicken in the crockpot.  Let it sit for a few hours and you’re good to go!

For the salmon, I mixed ginger, soy-sauce, red-pepper flakes.  I smeared that over 3 salmon fillets and cooked them in the oven until they were sizzling and done.

Breakfast yesterday was egg-whites on a piece of Ezekiel bread with avocado and of course my beloved sriracha.

Lunch was my veggie soup and 2 clementines… unphotographed.

Dinner was chicken on top of green beans with avocado and sprouts.  A little ketchup and sriracha dip on the side.

And for dessert I had plain yogurt with cinnamon, and tiny bit of stevia (trying to cut back) and a tsp of peanut butter.  Yum.  I will probably repeat this exact same eating day all week :-)  I also had a handful of trail-mix at work- just one handful…promise.

Fitness

Alright guys, I have a confession to make.  I am in love with Chalene Johnson.  She is just a ball of energy and enthusiasm- I love it!  I’ve done her Chalene Extreme workouts every day since Friday and I’m definitely sore.  It’s weight training, so I’m trying to build my pathetic biceps…

Don’t mind that my arm is as big as my head… I’ve always been so insecure about my arms so hopefully all that muscle will shred away all that fat and I’ll have Michelle Obama arms ;-)

Anyway, the DVDs are really fun and I’m enjoying it thus far.

Science

Ophthalmology is so cool!  Yesterday I watched a laser procedure and loved every minute of it.

This is actually a really good video explaining the procedure and why they do it in people who have had cataract surgery:

The way this rotation works is 2 weeks ophthalmology, 2 weeks anesthesia, Anesthesia EXAM ophthalmology for a few days, ophtho EXAM.  After that’s over in March, I start general surgery.

Yep. In the bathroom. Super cool ;-)

Yep. In the bathroom. Super cool ;-)

My goal right now is to get all the required quizzes and videos we have to watch out of the way so I don’t have to do anything that last week of ophtho and I can just focus on studying.  I also want to do a significant amount of studying ophtho and general surgery because my hours are great right now and on general surgery I may not have time.

Setting Goals

I’ve mentioned before that I’m not good at committing to things.  If I tell myself I’m going to do something, I tend to rebel.  I’m not so good at sticking to diets, workout plans, really anything.  I just kind of do what I want when I want.

BUT, one thing that does work for me is setting goals within a time frame and then giving myself freedom to check them off the list however I want.  For example, this week I told myself I have to finish watching all these didactic cases.  I could do them all today, all on Friday, a few each day- doesn’t matter- I just have to get them done by the end of the week.

Same with working out- I’ll say “I want to strength train at least 3 times this week and do at least 4 cardio sessions”.  Does that mean I have to workout today?  Nope.  Just as long as I meet my goal by the end of the week.

Do any of you set weekly goals like this instead of a more rigid schedule?

I used to set an hourly schedule when I was at home all day studying during second year.  I literally had every single hour planned out ahead of time and it was like a game trying to stick to the schedule.  Crazy right!?!?!

I certainly can’t do that now because I have no idea how long I will be at work each day.  Yesterday I got out at 4:30 but on Friday we were done by noon…

Okay enough of my blabbing.

Questions:

Tell me what you’ve been eating recently!!  Do you want to Quit Sugar with me?  I need to look into this…

Do you set goals?  How do you set them?

  1. gah my arms are also the part of my body i am most insecure about…i’m still learning to come to terms with the fact that everybody accumulates fat in different parts of their bodies, and that’s just how it is.
it’s so silly because my friend is always jealous of my legs while i’m jealous of her abs and arms…and neither of us can just be happy with what we have…

i really feel like for you to love EVERY part of your body and to be toned from head to toe, you have to be REALLY thin and/or exercise a lot!…otherwise everyone is going to have their flabby areas they’re unhappy about…i feel like if you scrutinize celebrities, it will be “oh they have such nice abs and legs! but i’m surprised their arms aren’t thinner.” ANYWAY my point is that the only people who don’t have at least ONE part of their body that’s flabbier are: models or body builders…and neither of their bodies are normal…

anyway! i love your asparagus/sprouts/etc layout, so aesthetically pleasing !

  2. I’ve tried planning by hours before, but it always ends up feeling terrible if I fall behind on that thing that was supposed to be done by 2 and then 3 and 4 and 5 are behind. It happens. Maybe somebody walks in and you talk for 10 minutes; bam, behind. This year, I bought a mini-notebook and I think to do every 2-page spread as a week. I organized by TO-DO and TO-STUDY and then by subjects within and just mark them off as I go. Maybe I got on an analytical chemistry kick and knocked off 3 assignments, but I wasn’t feeling Spanish or a healthcare class. It’s worked better for me, I think.

On a random side note… Would you be totally opposed to do something fashion-related sometime? You always have the cutest outfits! :) I’d love to see what you wear in a professional setting, semi-professional, etc.

    • I love your notebook system!!! Sounds like it really works for you. How is analytical chem? I took that senior year in college and I remember hating it at first and then kinda liking it at the end… it’s tough!! And I will TOTALLY do a fashion post!! You are so sweet Toni!

  3. I’ve heard so many people especially in the medical field really talk about how poisonous sugar is!! I think quitting it would be amazing! I’m not sure if I am ready to completely quit myself, but I would definitely consider it! What do you think of that book?

    • I haven’t read all of the book- but I’ve read a lot of her blog posts and she makes great points about sugar. I don’t think I will ever completely “quit” but definitely cut back!!

    • Thank you Christine! I was really struggling with sugar for probably 3 weeks- then finally last week I just snapped out of it and I feel a million times better. I tend to go in phases like that. Hope you get to feeling better soon!
