Starting Emergency Medicine and a Question About Makeup

I can’t thank you all enough for the love and support on my last blog :-)

Lately, I really feel like I have zero time to blog which has really made me think about my time.  I am not any busier than I normally am.  I was probably way busier last year when I was blogging during all my third year rotations.  How in the world did I make time to do it?

I can only come up with a few possible reasons my time is seeming to vanish each day.  For one, Kyle lives here now.  When I was living alone I didn’t have anyone else around the house.  Now that he’s here, I spend tons of time talking to him, lounging on the couch with him, cooking with him, all that good stuff :-)  Also, I know that I do better the busier I am.   The more I have to do, the more I get done.  When I have nothing going on, I literally do nothing.  I am such a sloth!!!!

I do things like watch Jeopardy every.single.night.

These past few months have been busy with traveling for interviews and such, but I haven’t had day to day responsibilities and I think I’ve become super lazy.

Oh- and I eat pizza and ice-cream!  Kyle is a bad influence!!

But that is about to change!! I’m starting my Emergency Medicine month now.  There are only three required courses during fourth year:  Sub-I (which I did in September), Emergency Medicine, and Radiology.  I have EM this month and Radiology next month.  I am so ready to get back to seeing patients!! I have not seen a single patient since SEPTEMBER!!! Yikes!! I am praying for the first patient I see in the emergency room this month!

I had to get out the door and get to orientation yesterday, so I ate my oatmeal in the car.  I bought a few items from Vitacost (have you guys used this website yet!?! Such good prices!!) and I decided to try cacao powder instead of cocoa powder in my oats.  I guess cacao powder has more of the good stuff you want from chocolate?  I honestly couldn’t taste a difference!  It tasted like chocolately, oaty, goodness as usual!

I actually have a question for you all this morning.

Can anyone recommend a good powder/foundation makeup???  I’ve been using Mac Studio Fix since high school and I love how it makes my skin look, but I am fed up with it not staying on my face!!!  It gets all over everything I touch- my clothes, a face mask if I’m in the operating room, and my white coat!

Can you see the bid smudge of makeup on my shoulder??? It’s so annoying and must stop.

So any recommendations for a powder that will stay on my face??

Thanks!!!  Have a wonderful day friends!

  1. Andrea,

You have pretty clear skin! I just use CoverGirl pressed powder (Light/Fair). It never comes off on clothes, masks, etc. Since your skin is nice at baseline, you probably don’t need the more expensive, heavier duty powders, do you? Try simple pressed powder out – it gives you the even tone throughout as well as grease control.

    Cheers,
    Kristyn

  2. I LOVE bare minerals! I like that it gives a flawless finish, doesn’t rub off on stuff, and also doesn’t make me look like I have makeup caked on. I used to use MAC too but love bare minerals foundation. It’s a three step process but not super time consuming and worth it!

  3. I also love bare minerals!! It’s my favorite!! Hope you try it! They have both the loose powder and the pressed. I recently switched to the pressed and it’s so much easier and less messy when putting it on! And it still looks great and stays on!

  4. I’ve tried bare minerals since I always heard such great reviews on it. Except I did not like it at all!! It looked uneven for some reason. But everyone else seems to love it :( idk I wish it looked just as good/natural for me too. I would recommend going to their store and having them give you a makeover before shelling out the $$.
Personally, I’ve been using Makeup forever HD and have been loving it. It’s quick, light, and stays on! Haven’t had that issue yet of it smearing off.

  5. Clinique was always the best for me with my sensitive, fair skin, and though I don’t have oily skin, my skin GETS oily (and clogged pores) with all other makeups. NOW, I only use a Blush (w No oil in it) combined with my light sparkle Star Dust by Lauren Mercier. “Lightly” sparkled Dust as a sheer loose setting powder all over face and mixed with Blush to “soften it…All Very Light and with No liquid, cream, or gel foundation (one less step! and stays all day even with perspiration if I don’t frequently touch/Rub my face …and every one thinks my skin is “moist! and Youthful! No info on my Age! “Real Age” is quite Young! haha It’s Quick and doesn’t have that “make up” feeling. In case Bare Minerals doesn’t work for you!

  6. Tarte Amazonian Clay has been my go-to since I discovered it this time last year- love it! Full coverage without that fake, caked-on look. I also love the story behind the brand. :)

And, Vitacost is thebomb.com, is it not? Amazing prices, quick ship and neatly packed. I’ve only ever tried cocoa powder- will have to give the cacao a try! Sounds delish!!

    • I have to look into the story now! I think vita cost is my new obsession! Just stop me from ordering too many quest bars haha!

  7. Love coco oats!!! :-) Question: For the people interested in EM, do they just do elective EM rotations in 3rd year so they have that covered in time for residency interviews?

    • Yep! EM is so easy to get experience in if you’re interested. After second year you can work as an extern in the ER and get paid!! So even during your non-EM rotations you can spend a few hours a week in the ED. It’s great experience. Then you can do an EM rotation during third year and during the first few months of 4th year :-)

  8. I’m so late with this comment but ignore everyone that says bare minerals (no offense ladies!!) But it DOESN’T work for all day wear! I swear by Estee Lauder Double Wear Light in 01. AH-MAY-ZINGGGG. honestly you can use a cheap powder (i use cover girl loose powder) because it just STAYS. Doesn’t even budge when i workout hard. :):)

  9. I used to use bare minerals all the time, but found that over time, my skin got really dry and that it didn’t stay on for a 12+ hour shift. My fiancé is a fashion photographer and a lot of the make up artists he uses swear by smash box camera ready bb cream. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It’s lightly tinted, but you can layer for more coverage, has moisturizer, oil control and SPF built in. It’s AMAZING. It is a little expensive, but one tube lasts forever. If you want more coverage, you can layer a powder-based foundation over top (like bare minerals) and because it’s a primer too, the powder will last longer and stay put. It also works great for keeping eyeshadow from forming those pesky lines as well.
